2019 Art Infusion – Sidewalk Chalk Art Event Returns to Janesville
JANESVILLE, WI - The Janesville Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, Inc. (JACVB) is pleased to announce the return of the popular Art Infusion Sidewalk Chalk Art event. It will be held September 7 & 8 at Firehouse Park in downtown Janesville. “Art Infusion is a great opportunity to engage in public art right here in Wisconsin’s Great Outside,” said Christine Rebout, JACVB Executive Director. “Artists can draw to compete or for fun and spectators can take in their creations.”
Art Infusion was developed by the JACVB in 2011 to enhance art appreciation, art education and community spirit while showcasing downtown Janesville to residents and visitors alike. This year, Master Chalk Artist/Street Painter, Leigh Alfredson (A.K.A. Lee Jones) will return to be the featured chalk artist for the event. Ms. Alfredson has been the featured artist each year except for the 2016 event when she was not able to participate. The 2-day event will include the mural by Leigh and a sidewalk chalk art competition for two age groups (ages 7-12 and 13 and up). Leigh’s mural will feature an image from the Janesville Town Square Gran Prix featuring cyclists with the new Black Hawk mural as the backdrop. The event will run from 9 AM to 4 PM on Saturday, September 7 and 10 AM to 2 PM on Sunday, September 8.
Sidewalk chalk artists of all skill levels are invited to participate in Art Infusion. There is no fee to draw a chalk mural for fun. Those who wish to participate in the chalk art competition will need to register at the event and pay a $15 fee, which includes chalk pastels, sponge and gloves (cash or check accepted, no credit cards). Additional chalk will be available for purchase for $10 per box. Competition prizes: age 7-12, (1)$200 grand prize, (1) $50 second place, (1) Culver’s gift card third place. For ages 13 and older, (1) $200 grand prize, (1) $50 second place, (1) Culver’s gift card third place. Event competition prizes will be awarded immediately following the chalking event on Sunday, September 8 at 2:30 PM.
“Both artists and spectators are invited to join us for the event,” said Susan Melton, JACVB Marketing Director. “It’s very exciting participating in the event but also watching the artists create their murals and then seeing their designs come to life! On Saturday, event-goers can enjoy Art Infusion and also take advantage of the Janesville Farmers Market. There will be live music at Art Infusion by Joshua Clark on Sunday from 11 AM to 2 PM. Visitors to the event are encouraged to pack a picnic and come down to Firehouse Park to enjoy Janesville, Wisconsin’s Great Outside.”
About Leigh Alfredson
Leigh Alfredson (known for over 20 years as Lee Jones in the chalking community) is a professional street painter living in the Orlando, Florida area and has been street painting for 22 years. Her company LJ DESIGNS/CHALK IT UP provides professional street painting services, as well as street painting festival consulting services. Leigh has traveled all over the United States, Curacao, and Italy to paint, and helps organizations and non-profits hold street painting events as fund-raisers, or as an added aspect to an already established event. She is now focusing on teaching street painting in schools all over the country, keeping the art form alive by teaching our youth, as well as teaching other groups (kids or adults) or individuals one-on-one.
Leigh grew up in Madison, WI where she attended art school and earned a degree in Commercial Art (now known as Graphic Design). After graduation, Leigh worked in ad agencies, graphics studios, and printing companies before opening her own design studio, LJ Designs, in 1990. In 1994 Leigh was introduced to street painting when she agreed to participate in the Rotary Orlando 1st Annual Street Painting Festival, although somewhat reluctantly since she received a “D” in pastels in her college media class!
Leigh’s style is graphic/realism, and she loves to do portraits, animals, or reproductions of Masters works such as Michelangelo, Caravaggio, and Bouguereau. Leigh has produced over 275 street paintings and produces street paintings and pastel drawings for Orlando area attractions.
